My Picks for 11/25/06

Sorry I forgot to post something yesterday. It was Friday but I didn't even realize that it was. I think I was still recovering from lots of turkey and drinking. Yesterday was a pretty nice win by the Huskers. Hopefully they still have some of those sweet trick plays next week in the Big 12 Championship for Texas or Oklahoma. Last week my picks took a step back from the 5-0 day 2 weeks ago, going 1-3-1 last week. That's OK though. In the last 2 weeks I've won two different pools and over $400! So hopefully I can turn it around here again. Here we go...

1* Tennessee -18` Over Kentucky - Ainge is back at QB full strength for UT, and he makes a huge difference, making this a very good passing offense. Kentucky is giving up over 500 yards a game on the road. UK has been playing well of late, but all that does is give us some line value, so it helps. But this one is all about the UT offense rolling all over the UK defense.

2* Oklahoma -6 Over Oklahoma St - If OU wins this game they will go to the Big 12 Championship to face Nebraska. With that incentive that was added yesterday after A&M took out Texas, OU will be incredibly focused. OSU has played really well this season, especially on offense. Problem is, their defense still sucks. OU's defense is possibly the best in the country. I expect the OU defense to completely shut down OSU, and OU wins by 2 TD's or more.

3* Maryland -1 Over Wake Forest - This game is to decide who goes to the ACC Championship Game. Miami beat BC Thursday night, which adds incentive for Maryland - if BC had won, Maryland would not be able to go to the Championship. Last week Maryland's first 2 posessions ended in defensive TD's for BC, and they were never able to get back into it. This week at home, turnovers won't be a problem. Maryland is simply a more rounded team, better coach especially in games that matter (Wake has never really played a game that matters), and the home field. I'm still not sold on Wake and Maryland will win this game, though it will be close.

4* Missouri -7 Over Kansas - KU is coming off a big win over rival KSU, who was off a huge hangover win over Texas. Mizzou went into ISU and came out with a loss against a team playing inspired for coach McCarney. Those games give us a touch of value. Mizzou has lost 3 straight games, and that gives us big line value. Missouri is far better on offense, better on defense, and have the home field. Mizzou has been incredible on offense and defense at home this season. Mizzou needs a win here, are a far more talented team, and this line should probably be in the double digits instead of 7. Mizzou rolls by more than 2 TD's.

5* UTEP -11 Over Memphis - UTEP has had a rough year, after a decent start. However, this is a very good offense, one of the best passing offenses in the country. They are going up against a Memphis defense that is one of the worst in the country against the pass. As a result, UTEP will put up a whole lot of points - in the upper 40's at least. With those numbers, UTEP should cover by 10 points or more.

2 more things to say. Arizona -3 over Arizona St is another game I love. UA is a solid team, and their QB Tuitama is back healthy. With him, they are a very solid football team, and I expect them to win by 10. It was tough deciding between them and Tenn for my 1* selection.

Creighton has a Final 4 opponent coming to the QWest today. Last year CU won at George Mason by 20some points. CU is favored by 9`, and that line surprised me after getting beat at NU last week. GM lost at home to Wichita though, and have a lot of holes to fill. I expect this game to be a lot closer, and I won't be as bold as I was last week, but I like GM to cover those 9` points.

Good Luck!

My Picks for 11/18/06

For those of you starting to give up on my picks, I hope you didn't give up on me last week, as I went 5-0! I also won the Prog Pool last week, going 7-3 in those picks. That ND game really was one of the easiest lines of the year (or seemed so at least). Lets hope the momentum keeps rolling...

1* Texas Tech -6 Over Oklahoma St - Texas Tech's offense has really come around lately. OSU has been very solid, especially on offense, but have not been as good on the road. I expect TT to be able to move the ball at will and score a ton of points, winning by more than 10.

2* Arizona St -4 Over UCLA - I capitalized on UCLA last week, and ASU has been up and down, though mostly down, all season. With a home game against an average defense, average offense, and strong home field, I expect ASU to put up a ton of points as well, winning a shootout.

3* BYU -26` Over New Mexico - I've been riding BYU all season. New Mexico has actually been a solid team, but will not be able to stop BYU. I expect BYU to score every time they touch the ball. As long as BYU puts up 45 points, this is an easy cover, and I expect them to score 50. But really, I'm just riding BYU as they've covered almost every game this season.

4* Penn St -17` Over Michigan St. - John L Smith is coaching his final MSU game. Reason for the players to get up for it? No way, they don't like him. Often players want their outgoing coach to go out on a good note, but these players are simply ready for the season to end. Penn St has a lot to play for, and Paterno will be at the game coaching from the booth, bringing them added motivation. I'll take the PSU motivated team over the MSU team that simply doesn't care. I would like this game at 25 points, and it's only 17`.

5* Iowa St +14` Over Missouri - See Mich St above - complete opposite scenario here. ISU loves coach McCarney, and will put their asses on the line to send out their beloved coach on a winning note. I've always liked McCarney, and he had a fantastic run at ISU. These guys really will be hyped to win this game, and since ISU is getting 3 possessions, I love ISU, and expect an outright win. Yes, ISU wins this game.

Bonus Are you ready for some basketball? Creighton goes to Lincoln tonight to take on Nebraska. I'm leaving in just a couple of short hours. Creighton is only favored by 4` in this game. This is easy money. Throw everything you won from last week on this game!

I can't finish these picks without mentioning Ohio St - Michigan, one of the greatest rivalries in sports. I saw a stat this morning that in the last 57 games, they have split evenly! That is amazing. Legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler passed away yesterday, adding even more intrigue to this matchup. I don't have a pick on this game, but had to bring it up as my respect for these 2 programs and this rivalry is very high.

Good Luck!

Been waiting for Friday, how about you?

It's been a very long week of work and school. I think every night at work I've been there an hour longer than I wanted, and haven't been able to get enough done at school. But a good weekend is up ahead, and a short work week next week with the holiday. I can't wait. I also look forward to Saturday - Ohio St plays Michigan and Creighton plays at Nebraska. Should be a lot of fun. Anyway on to the humor. This is an outstanding interview with Will Ferrell on NPR. It's quite a long interview but worth every second. They talk about his new movie "Stranger than Fiction" and his life in general. I've seen many Ferrell interviews, but this is the first time I've ever heard him really being himself, being a serious person. I highly suggest you listen to it. Visit that link and click Listen.

Have a great weekend!

My Picks for 11/11/06

OK, it's about time we turn it around. No better time than now to start. Here we go...

1* Ohio St -23 Over Northwestern - Ohio St has been dominant all season, though they slipped up a little bit last week only winning by 7. This week they take on a Northwestern team that won at Iowa last week and the week before that played Michigan tough. Not this week. OSU is going to send a message going into the showdown with Michigan next week (biggest game of the year, decides who goes to the National Championship game) that they are the best team in the country, and Northwestern is the unfortunate team that will be the messenger.

2* UCLA +1` Over Oregon St - Oregon St has now assumed the role of most overvalued team in the country, as they beat USC two weeks ago then destroyed ASU last week. UCLA has had some injuries at QB but get their starter Olson back this week, and they have played solidly with him at the helm. Without him, they sucked. I expect UCLA to win this game by 10.

3* Central Florida +1 Over Memphis - Memphis is simply a terrible football team right now. UCF has been a team I've liked all season but have never come through, but I'm not ready to give up on them. They have played well, but have been plagued by turnovers. This week they face a defense that won't force any turnovers, and unless UCF kills themselves in this game, they should win it easily.

4* Houston -5 Over SMU - Houston has been a pretty solid team all season, with one of the best, most underrated passing offenses in the country. This year they go up against one of the worst passing defenses in the country, and QB Dan Kolb is going to absolutely tear them apart. I expect a Houston win of no less than 2 TD's.

5* Notre Dame -11` Over Air Force - This is the second time I have liked ND all season against the spread. There are a few factors why this is my favorite pick in about a month. 1) The talent gap in this game is absolutely huge. 2) ND just played against Navy 3 weeks ago, and they run the same complicated offense as AF, so it was fresh on the minds of the ND defensive unit as they practiced this week. 3) Brady Quinn and his receivers will have a giant day. There are no players in Air Force's secondary that can cover McKnight or Zmardija (no way I spelled that right). Quinn will throw for over 400 yards and 4 TD's, and that alone will be enough to cover the 11`. 4) This line should be no less than 18, I can't believe it's only 11`.

As far as the Nebraska game goes, this is a big one. A&M is a brutal place to play, as I have experienced it firsthand. It's also one of the best places to watch a game. NU has been practicing this week for the noise by blaring the A&M fight song full blast on the speaker system in Memorial Stadium. These are two very similar teams, and I expect a low scoring battle with NU pulling it out 17-14.

GO BIG RED

Friday for everyone

It's Friday, but I chose not to work today, so sorry this is a little late. Last night's Cursive show was great, and for those who missed it I feel sorry for you. Anyway, not a whole lot to say. I'll just leave you with a tribute to outgoing Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from the Daily Show a few months ago.

What a fantastic 24 hours

Let me count the ways:

1 The Democrats take the House
2 423 in Nebraska fails
3 Rumsfeld resigns
4 The Democrats take the Senate

What better day can you ask for? Seriously, it was a terrible day at work, but it really didn't matter. Now Bush says that they all need to work together. Hmmm, what a novel idea. You mean instead of purposely dividing our country in half, ruining the country of Iraq by killing almost 3000 Americans and almost 50,000 innocent Iraqis, create hundreds of thousands of terrorists, all for no apparent reason? Shouldn't they have been working together all along? Maybe our country wouldn't be in the shambles it is in if he had worked together with both Republicans and Democrats.

Nothing is fixed because of this, but we're sure as hell going to be able to go in the right direction. Good job, America!

FridayPicksWeekendEtc

I'm posting my Friday funny, my picks, and talking about my weekend all at once. Why? I'm off to Chicago first thing in the morning. It should be a ton of fun. I get in around 11:30 and my Dad and I are heading straight to Manny's deli for a great pastrami sandwich. Then Friday night Moran and are are going to the Bulls game. When that ends, J-Bone and Pete should be arriving, so we'll meet up with them and go out. Then around 11:30 Mike Moeschler and the Mule get into town, at which point we will continue drinking. Saturday we'll go watch the Husker game at a bar, and at 1:00 I'm going to watch my cousin swim for Northwestern. Many of my family members are going up to Chicago for this meet, then we'll probably all go do something after the meet. Sunday we are going to tailgate before the Bears game. A few of our crew have tickets, but they are running around $300 a piece - not worth it. But we'll tailgate, maybe find some leftover tickets after kickoff, but if not we'll find a bar to watch NFL games. Should be a great time!

Now to my Friday funny. Since I am going to Chicago, this is perfect, as my friend Tom in Chicago sent out this classic SNL sketch.

Now to my top 5 football picks for Saturday, quickly...

1* Tennessee +3 Over LSU - Love Tennessee as the home dog for amazingly the 3rd time this season.

2* Oklahoma -3 Over Texas A&M - This should be a great game, but the OU defense is just too good for A&M and I think OU wins this one by 10 at least.

3* Kent -14 Over Buffalo - Did you really think Kent would NOT be on my list? They didn't cover last week, but I expect a big bounce back, after blowing a couple of punts last week to lose the game.

4* Colorado -4 Over Kansas St - This is a tough road game, and a very solid Colorado defense, for a freshman QB to go perform. Not to mention the altitude. Colorado wins this game by 3 TD's, it won't even be close.

5* Iowa St Even Over Kansas - One of those games here where I can't figure out the line. Iowa St has had it's troubles this year, but they do not lack talent on the offensive side of the ball. I think they should be able to score points and get just enough stops to win this one easily.

Good luck and have a great weekend!!!
