Happy Friday, Everyone!

It's Friday and I can't wait for the weekend. Football season is right around the corner, I have 3 more weeks of school, and this should be a fun weekend with the wedding and float trip. Saturday will be a key recovery day so I'm able to drink while floating down the river. I just saw a story that is good news and bad news on cnn.com. The good news is that Bill Frist is backing stem cell research. The bad news is that he is obviously positioning himself for a run for president in 2008. He'd be an easy guy to bash since he is a doctor and doesn't know how HIV is contracted, but the Left is nowhere near as good at manipulating the media as the Right. The Right can get people to believe that Al Gore claimed that he invented the Internet (which he never said), and the Left can't even make people see how the Right is abusing their power, with Cheney and Halliburton.

Anyway, in a few weeks my college football and NFL preseason predictions will come out. I will also have a Husker preview and a prediction of where they will finish. Everyone have a great weekend!!!

The Upcoming Weekend

I just wanted to post a few reminders. We will be having after hours at our house Friday night after the wedding of Jessica Weiland and Nick Aliano. Come on by. If you are going to the Maria Taylor show that night feel free to bring people afterward.

Sunday is the floating trip, hope to see some of you there.

Justin Oberst will be in town this weekend. Unfortunately, Mackenzie will not.

In case I haven't told anyone, our first big party at the house will be next Friday, August 5. Bring liquor!

Bush responds to my last post...

No more "War On Terror"?

So the Bush Administration is no longer using the term "War On Terror".

Interesting that despite all the criticism of that term four years ago when it was coined, that they are finally changing their tune. I will say I am glad they will be abandoning the term, but they should have never used it. The so-called War on Terror has done nothing except create more terror. Insurgency in Iraq has not decreased and gets stronger every day. With the war in Iraq, our enemies in other countries that we are not fighting are developing leaders and gaining followers that are creating new terrorists all over the region. Impressionable young people are seeing their neighboring country of Iraq get worse every day - homes destroyed, children and other people killed, jobs eliminated - and they can look to only a couple of places to place blame - the United States and its allies. The terrorists are winning this war, and we are not doing what should be done to stop it, instead we are fueling it. It's too late to turn back now.

Look at London right now. England was our #1 supporter in this war. Would these attacks have happened if they hadn't supported the U.S.? Would that city be living in fear? I think not. Look at Paris. There is no fear there. Remember freedom fries? This whole country took any jab they could at the French when they wouldn't support us. We should be apologizing to the French, telling them and others how correct they were and how wrong we were. But that will never happen. Accountability is not in the vocabulary of this administration.

I write this however with no solutions. We are in a mess with no real solution other than to get the Iraqis to the point where they can handle themselves. The problem is that takes years and years, and as this time goes on, the insurgency grows, terrorism grows, and things will continue on a path - hopefully one with an end - but right now it is just hard to see one.

OK, I just felt like venting for a second. Feels like this Roberts nomination and Rove scandal have taken away from Iraq the last few weeks, which is a good thing. But nothing has changed, there is just more news out there than just Iraq at this time. At least the shuttle went off without a hitch!

Nothing to say

I really don't have a whole lot to say right now, but thought I'd at least make an entry. It was a pretty uneventful weekend since I had 7 AM tee times both mornings. I was happy to be off the course before 11:30 each day to beat the 100 degree heat. I picked up my Phil Steele college football preview magazine this weekend, so you should see my preseason predictions in a few weeks. I will also be posting my picks of the week every week, so keep an eye out for those. For those of you not familiar with that Phil Steele magazine it is the ONLY pre-season magazine to read. His predictions are by far the best around - here is his Website: Phil Steele Website

For those going to the Weiland-Aliano wedding this weekend (or even if you are not going), we will probably have the post-reception party at my house. Come on by.

Hopefully I'll have some more to write in the next few days, but for now I'm done. Everyone have a good week.

Big 12 Media Day - Go Big Red!

Media days, as always, are fairly uneventful. However it does make for some good local sports radio, with interviews of all the coaches and many of the better players in the league. My predictions will come in a few weeks, so for now I'll just talk about NU. They seem to be focused on having a good season, and the players seem MUCH more comofortable with Callahan and his system, as senior offensive tackle Seppo Evwaraye said "The first year with the playbook and all the terminology, it looked like Hebrew to me. "This year, we remembered a lot of stuff from the season, so we picked it up faster." I think they are confident they will win games, but know that it will not be immediate, when Callahan said "Our goal is to bring Nebraska back to being in the national championship hunt on a yearly basis. This has been a significant challenge. To target exactly when that transformation is going to occur, I don't know. I really don't." I am happy with where we are headed, especially with that recruiting class coming in. I still think Callahan is getting a bad rap right now because we didn't go to a bowl. But we knew we wouldn't go the rest of our lives going to a bowl every single season, so we got that season over with, and now the future looks very bright. The schedule sets up well early, and if we can go 4-1 or 5-0 in the first 5 games it should be a great season. GO BIG RED!!!

Remember, I welcome your comments. What does everyone else think???

This is my niece Natalie and my first picture post. We'll see how it works.

Roberts

OK, now I have looked into the subject of Judge Roberts's nomination to the Supreme Court to comment on it. I think he will be the exact opposite of what we want, but I don't know if there is much that can be done about it. He voted that the Geneva Conventions did not protect Guantanamo prisoners, giving the President absolute power. He has argued that Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided. Although he has stated that he regards Roe v. Wade as "settled law", that was in his appeals-court confirmation hearings, and based on all of his other work against abortion rights there is a good chance the issue will be revisited. These are just a couple of short examples. The following story shows how flawed his beliefs are in individual rights. In D.C. a 12 year old was arrested during a crack down for eating fries on a subway train. She was handcuffed, fingerprinted, thrown into a cop car, and detained for 3 hours. Her mother went to court because of the treatment of her daughter, and Judge Roberts ruled against her, saying that the acts advanced "the legitimate goal of promoting parental awareness and involvement with children who commit delinquent acts." Wow.

My First Blog Entry

For my first ever blog entry I didn't really know what to discuss. I could discuss the nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court from last night, but I don't know anything about him. People on the Left are complaining that he's too activist, people on the Right are already attacking the Left for attacking Roberts. Amazing, it's divided! Thanks a lot, George. Based on what I've read so far though it does not look good, and Roberts is obviously not anywhere near an equal replacement to Sandra Day O'Connor. I could also discuss the Big 12 Media Days, but Nebraska is just getting there so I'll wait on that too. But I am looking forward to what should be an amazing improvement this season.

So for my first entry I have decided to talk about my life. For those that don't know I just bought a house. It is located at 49th and Webster, which is 1 block north of Underwood (Dundee area). It has 3 bedrooms, though one of those would be a terrible bedroom, so it is an office. It has hardwood floors in the living room and dining room, and a newly remodeled kitchen. The basement is finished - with a bar! My roommate is my friend Sarah Ann Lewis. She is extremely busy studying for the bar next week. The house was built in 1915 so it has some work that needs to be done, but it is in great shape for being that old. I love the location - it is my favorite area of Omaha.

I am also finishing up school. I have been in a year-long Accelerated Bachelors Degree Program for MIS. I have 4 weeks left in the program, so I am almost done! After that I just have a few credit hours and then I will have my degree and my 13 year college life will be complete!

That is all for me. For the rest of my family, my Mom just moved to Denver and lives with my sister Kathleen and her husband Michael (and his daughter Sarah also stays there from time to time). Kathleen, Michael, and Sarah, and my stepbrother Andy and his wife Paula came into town a few weeks ago and we took family pictures. I will post some of them once I get them edited to attach to my blog, so keep an eye out for those.

I plan to update this every few days or so at least. There should be places for comments, discussion, and other things on my blog, plus I will have links to my favorite Websites. So bookmark it and check it out every once in a while and send me any comments you would like.
